Pomegranate juice good for the heart

1 minute
Pomegranate

Pomegranate juice, which is available at health food shops and supermarkets, is being promoted as a heart disease protector.

Preliminary studies by Israeli scientists (Aviram et al., 2004, Journal of Clinical Nutrition) showed that, when taken daily, it can prevent the thickening of arteries in the neck. Now, new trials at Hammersmith Hospital, London (Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust) will look at the juice’s circulatory benefits in more depth. Lead researcher: Dr. Michael Aviram (Technion Faculty of Medicine, Israel).

Pomegranates contain polyphenols, tannins, and anthocyanins, and may possess three times the total antioxidant ability compared to green tea and red wine (Gil et al., 2000, Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry).
