Do I need probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that are found in certain food products and may also be taken as supplements. They are thought to promote a healthy gut and aid digestion.

Only in the past few years have we begun to understand the crucial role the gut plays in our overall health, affecting not only our physical but also our emotional wellbeing. In our recent article on Improving Gut Health, we explored the impact the trillions of bacteria and microorganisms in our gut (known as the microbiome) have on not only our digestion functions but our broader holistic health too.

As scientific advances, supplements, wearable technology and a persistent trend of wellbeing have encouraged many of us to take a more active role in our wellness, we’re always on the lookout for gut health hacks. But are probiotics the answer to keeping your gut happy? Let’s explore –

What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms, mainly bacteria and yeasts, that can support your gut microbiome when consumed in the right amounts.

You can find probiotics in fermented foods like yoghurt, sauerkraut, and miso, or in supplement form. However, not all probiotics are the same—different strains may have different effects.

Why are probiotics taken for gut health?

Many people take probiotics regularly in the hope of improving their long-term gut health. Others consume probiotics with the purpose of relieving gut issues such as bloating, constipation, indigestion, diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or Crohn’s disease. They may also be used to counter the effects of antibiotics which, while essential for fighting infections, can also disrupt the gut microbiome.

Probiotics are believed to aid gut health by introducing beneficial bacteria that may counteract harmful microbes and support overall gut function. However, not all probiotic strains provide the same benefits, and their effectiveness depends on the type of issue being addressed.

Do probiotics improve gut health?

Ultimately, there is little conclusive research to support whether probiotics actually improve gut health, although many people claim better digestive health as a result of introducing probiotics.

Here are a few benefits probiotics may have –

  • Supporting digestion – Some strains, like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (both found in fermented foods and some supplements), can help maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria.
  • Relieve lactose-related issues – If you struggle with lactose intolerance, certain probiotics may help break down lactose, making dairy easier to digest.
  • Antibiotics – Some probiotics have been shown to reduce tummy problems that can be caused by antibiotics.
  • Assist in managing irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – Some studies suggest that specific probiotic strains may help relieve certain IBS symptoms.

Should I take probiotics?

This is no yes or no answer regarding whether someone should take probiotics. Gut microbiome balance is, by nature, volatile and subject to change. Moreover, none of us have any real knowledge of the unique bacteria makeup of our gut so introducing new live bacteria can be risky. What works for one person may have a negative effect on another.

Chances are, there are probiotics in your diet anyway – if you eat yoghurt, miso or opt for sourdough bread. Therefore, the best way to know what impact (if any) probiotics have on you is to listen to your gut. Take note of how your digestion functions in the hours (or even the next day) after taking a probiotic and this should help you decide if probiotics are good for you.

Probiotics are not the only route to better gut health though. Solo Nutrition’s FloraFifty supplement contains an amazing 22 strains of 50 billion live bacteria designed to promote harmony in the gut. The delayed-release capsules also help the ‘friendly’ bacteria bypass the stomach and reach the intestines intact where they deliver an army of ‘good’ bacteria that can help aid your gut microbiome.

Whether or not you choose to take a gut health supplement like FloraFifty and/or use probiotics to complement your wellbeing, what is essential for good gut health is maintaining a healthy balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, managing stress and keeping up a reasonably active lifestyle.
